There is a strong connection between diabetes and periodontal disease that some researchers define periodontal disease as the sixth complication of diabetes.

Diabetic patients show a risk to develop periodontal disease three times higher than non-diabetics. Elevated blood glucose levels influence the development of periodontitis and also the healing phase after periodontal therapy.

For this reason it is essential that every person with diabetes knows to have a high risk of developing periodontal disease and, as a result of it, to lose the teeth. The success of the periodontal therapy is possible if there a strong collaboration between the dentist, the patient and his doctor.
